How much is +3, +6 and +10 dB?
Decibels are logarithmic: every 20 dB multiplies the signal level by ten, so +6 dB roughly doubles it. The fixed settings pass through a limiter so peaks cannot clip into distortion.
| Setting | Signal level | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| +3 dB | About 1.4 times | It is slightly too quiet |
| +6 dB | About 2 times | It is clearly too quiet |
| +10 dB | About 3.2 times | It is very quiet, such as a phone across a room |
| Even out | Normalised to −16 LUFS | Some parts are quiet and others loud |
What louder cannot fix
Raising the volume raises everything in the recording, including background noise and hum. If the voice itself is unclear, louder will not make it clearer; re recording, or a clean voice, will.
