The classic meme text style

The look people recognise is bold condensed capitals, white with a black outline, centred at the top and bottom of the picture. The outline is what makes it readable on both light and dark parts of a photo.

The maker uses Anton, a free condensed typeface in the same spirit, because the font most associated with memes is not installed on every phone. Switch to black text with a white outline for very bright images, or turn off capitals for longer captions.

Getting the text to read well

  • Keep each line short. Five to eight words at the top and at the bottom read at a glance.
  • Put the setup at the top and the punchline at the bottom.
  • Leave the face or the subject clear: text sits in the top and bottom strips of the image.
  • Save as JPG for photos you will post, PNG for screenshots and flat images.

Private by design

The image is drawn on a canvas inside your browser and saved from there. It is never sent to Percify or anyone else, and nothing is added to the picture except your text.
