What decides the size of a GIF
A GIF stores every frame with a palette of at most 256 colours and compresses far less efficiently than video, so the file grows with three things you control: how long it is, how wide it is, and how many frames a second it plays. Halving the width cuts each frame to about a quarter of the pixels; halving the frame rate halves the frames.
This converter builds one colour palette from your clip before encoding, which keeps gradients and skin tones from banding.
GIF limits on X
From X’s help page on posting photos and GIFs. The converter tells you which limit your GIF fits.
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Animated GIF size | Up to 5 MB on mobile, up to 15 MB on the web |
| GIFs per post | One, and not combined with photos |
| Tagging people | Not possible on an animated GIF |
When to post a video instead
GIFs have no sound. If the clip needs its audio, such as someone speaking, post it as a video. For reactions, loops and short demos without sound, a GIF autoplays and loops.
