How many words fit a video
Words at each pace, rounded. Your own pace is what matters, which is why the calculator can time you.
| Video length | Slow, 120 a minute | Conversational, 150 a minute | Fast, 180 a minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 s | 30 words | 38 words | 45 words |
| 30 s | 60 words | 75 words | 90 words |
| 1 min 00 s | 120 words | 150 words | 180 words |
| 1 min 30 s | 180 words | 225 words | 270 words |
| 2 min 00 s | 240 words | 300 words | 360 words |
| 3 min 00 s | 360 words | 450 words | 540 words |
| 5 min 00 s | 600 words | 750 words | 900 words |
How to calculate spoken length
Divide the number of words by your speaking pace in words a minute, then multiply by 60 for seconds. A 150 word script read at 150 words a minute runs 60 seconds; at 120 words a minute it runs 75 seconds.
Scripts usually run longer than the arithmetic says once pauses, emphasis and on screen moments are added, so leave a margin, especially for short videos.
Length limits worth knowing
- YouTube treats uploads that are square or vertical and up to three minutes long as Shorts, so a vertical script over three minutes will not be a Short.
