How long is my script?

Speaking pace

Start, read the whole script at your normal pace, then stop. Your own pace replaces the preset.

0 s

0 words at 150 words a minute.

How many words for a video?

At 150 words a minute:

15 s videoabout 38 words
30 s videoabout 75 words
1 min 00 s videoabout 150 words
1 min 30 s videoabout 225 words
3 min 00 s videoabout 450 words

Leave room for pauses and on screen moments: a script that fills the time exactly usually runs long when spoken with emphasis.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Paste the script

The word count and spoken length update as you type.

  2. Step 2

    Set the pace

Pick slow, conversational or fast, or time yourself reading it aloud for your real pace.

  3. Step 3

    Fit it to the video

Read off how many words fit 15, 30, 60, 90 or 180 seconds, and trim until it fits.

How to calculate spoken length

Divide the number of words by your speaking pace in words a minute, then multiply by 60 for seconds. A 150 word script read at 150 words a minute runs 60 seconds; at 120 words a minute it runs 75 seconds.

Scripts usually run longer than the arithmetic says once pauses, emphasis and on screen moments are added, so leave a margin, especially for short videos.

Length limits worth knowing

  • YouTube treats uploads that are square or vertical and up to three minutes long as Shorts, so a vertical script over three minutes will not be a Short.
