Quick Answer

comparison

Yes, a few tools turn text into sign language video with an AI signer: Signapse (ASL and BSL, free watermarked Starter, Team $390 a month), SignCaption (ASL, 15 free minutes, Pro $19.99 a month), the Hand Talk phone app (ASL, BSL and Libras, free with ads) and GenASL, open source code from AWS. They suit short, clear content; for important information use a qualified interpreter or human review. Percify does not make sign language video.

Can AI turn text into ASL video? 4 real tools compared: Signapse, SignCaption, Hand Talk and AWS GenASL, on price, languages and who each one is for.

Yes, a few tools can now turn written text into a sign language video, with an AI signer on screen. They are newer and narrower than captions, and for anything important they work best with a human checking the result. This page compares the four we could verify, with facts from each tool's own page, checked on 13 September 2026.

Percify is not on the list. It does not make sign language video, and the last section explains why an earlier version of this page said it did.

Signapse SignStudio

Signapse ↗ makes sign language video with digital signers, for both American Sign Language and British Sign Language, from text, audio or video. The free Starter plan has one seat and exports watermarked standard definition video, with extra minutes at $10 each. The Team plan is $390 a month for 400 AI minutes a year and four seats, with HD export and no watermark, and Enterprise is $780 a month for 1,200 minutes. All subscriptions need a 12 month commitment. Signapse also sells a human review of the AI translation as a paid add on, which says something useful about where the technology is today.

SignCaption

SignCaption ↗ turns video, audio or text into American Sign Language with AI avatars, and also turns signed video into captions. It describes itself as made by Deaf people for Deaf people. The free trial includes 15 minutes of AI credits, Pro is $19.99 a month for 60 minutes, and its Avatars Studio starts at $7.50 a minute. It is optimised for ASL, with other sign languages planned.

Hand Talk

Hand Talk ↗ is a phone app led by Hugo, a 3D interpreter who signs the text or speech you give him in ASL, BSL or Libras, Brazilian Sign Language. It is free, with ads and purchases inside the app, and on 13 September 2026 it had more than 5 million downloads on Google Play and a 4.2 rating from about 69,700 reviews. It is built for everyday lookups and for learning signs, not for producing a finished video for publication.

GenASL (an AWS sample)

GenASL ↗ is sample code from Amazon Web Services that turns text, audio or video into an ASL avatar animation. It is not an app: you deploy it in your own AWS account, where it uses services such as Amazon Transcribe and Amazon Bedrock. The code is free under the MIT No Attribution licence, but you pay for the AWS services it runs on. Its signs come from the American Sign Language Lexicon Video Dataset, which covers a little over 3,300 signs, so its vocabulary is limited.

What AI signing can and can't do yet

Sign languages are full languages with their own grammar, not English spelled out with hands. Facial expression and the space around the signer carry meaning too, which is exactly what a generated signer finds hardest. Vocabulary is the other limit: a system can only sign the signs it has learned, and GenASL's dataset has a little over 3,300.

That is why the tools above are good for short, clear, well defined content, and why the most established one sells a human review on top of the AI.

Important: for medical, legal, emergency or other important information, use a qualified human interpreter, or at least have a fluent signer review the AI version before it is published.

Which one to use

- You publish a lot of video and need BSL or ASL at scale: Signapse, with human review for anything important.

- You are a creator or small team who needs ASL on some videos: SignCaption.

- You want to look up or learn signs on your phone: Hand Talk.

- You are a developer building sign language into your own product: GenASL as a starting point.

Where Percify fits, and a correction

That was wrong, and we have rewritten the page: Percify does not make sign language video.

Percify makes talking avatar videos with lip sync, which serve hearing viewers. If you need the same message spoken in several languages, Percify's video dubbing does that. The signed version needs one of the tools above, or a human interpreter.

Frequently asked

Yes. Signapse, SignCaption, the Hand Talk app and the GenASL sample from AWS all turn text into a signing avatar. Quality varies, and for important content a fluent signer or a qualified interpreter should check it; Signapse sells a human review for this reason.

Hand Talk is a free phone app with ads. SignCaption has a free trial of 15 minutes, Signapse has a free Starter plan that exports watermarked video, and GenASL is free code that you run on your own AWS account.

Signapse makes both BSL and ASL video, and the Hand Talk app signs in ASL, BSL and Libras. SignCaption and GenASL focus on ASL.

Not yet for important content. Sign languages have their own grammar and use facial expression, which generated signers find hardest, and vocabularies are limited: GenASL learns from a dataset of a little over 3,300 signs.

No. Percify makes talking avatar videos with lip sync. An earlier version of this page said it could turn text into ASL video, and that was wrong.
